Nature offers many rare gifts to perfumery, and the green, woody notes of patchouli are among the most indispensable. This blog explores what patchouli is, where it comes from, and how it adds depth to a fragrance composition.
What Is Patchouli?
Patchouli is a green, bushy herb of the mint family. It belongs to the genus Pogostemon and grows two to three feet tall. The plant bears delicate pinkish-white flowers and aromatic leaves that perfumers have used for centuries for their strong, distinctive scent. Patchouli is native to tropical Asia, but it thrives in warm to tropical climates around the world.
The Story Behind the Name
The name patchouli comes from the Tamil words patchai, meaning "green," and ellai, meaning "leaf." It points to the herb's homeland, since Tamil belongs to the Dravidian language family spoken in the Indian subcontinent.
The plant travelled to the Middle East along the Silk Road, and it reached Europe largely thanks to Napoleon Bonaparte. He is said to have brought home patchouli-scented cashmere shawls from Egypt. The fabric was perfumed with patchouli oil, which also protected it from moths, but the source of the scent was a closely guarded secret. The patterns of the oriental textiles were soon easy to copy, yet European manufacturers still had to import the fragrant oil from the East. The secret finally came out in 1837, when Francisco Manuel Blanco described the plant as Mentha cablin, revealing the source of the mysterious scent to the Western world.
The Scent of Patchouli
Patchouli is a cornerstone of the chypre family of fragrances. Its scent is earthy and herbaceous, with a rich green heart and a woody base. Patchouli essential oil and patchouli absolute are both prized by perfumers. The absolute is a dark green liquid obtained by solvent extraction of the dried leaves, with a rich, sweet, herbaceous aroma and a woody-balsamic undertone.
Patchouli blends beautifully with oriental bouquets, chypre and fougรจre fragrances, and powdery perfumes. It pairs especially well with vetiver, which shares its earthy character, as well as sandalwood, cedarwood, clove, lavender, rose, and labdanum.
Patchouli in Giordano Fragrances
Two best sellers from Giordano Fragrances, Midnight Oud and Aqua Wave, show how patchouli lends a profound depth and an almost mysterious quality to a fragrance.
Midnight Oud
Midnight Oud opens with refreshing lavender, rosewood, and the exotic spices nutmeg and saffron. The heart blends soft sensuality with strength, with rose, oud, and moss joined by tobacco for an air of mystery. Patchouli enriches the base alongside musk, sweet caramel, and warm amber.
Midnight Oud is available in a convenient 20ml size as well as the 100 ml bottle.

Aqua Wave
Aqua Wave is inspired by a free man, as deep and mysterious as the ocean. It is a rush of freshness, with the exhilaration of a surfer riding a wave. This fougรจre fragrance shows how patchouli can bind a composition together. It opens with a zest for life: bergamot, apple, spearmint, and fruity pineapple. The heart affirms this with cedarwood, sandalwood, and moss, and patchouli gathers them all together.
Aqua Wave is also available in a
